The Chicago School of Social Psychology is characterized by a rich conceptualization of the social context and the various connections to more molar (e.g., cultural) and molecular (e.g., neuroscience) levels of organization, with an emphasis on understanding the underlying mechanisms for social phenomena that are of enduring importance. Topics of ongoing research in the program include emotion, prejudice and stigmatization, attitudes and persuasion, loneliness and social support, biological and cultural influences on social behavior, nonverbal communication, decision making, political psychology, and social neuroscience. The program provides training that is designed to prepare students for careers in all aspects of research and scholarship in social psychology. The program is characterized by multi-level integrative analyses of individual differences and social phenomena.

There are two ways to become involved with the Social Psychology program as a graduate student. The first is to be admitted to the Department of Psychology as a doctoral student in Social Psychology. The second is to earn a graduate certificate in Social Psychology by working with an affiliate member of the Social Psychology faculty.
