Program Requirements

Required Courses for students entering in Autumn 2008 or later

I. Statistics/Methodology Sequence

A coordinated two course sequence covering statistical methods (Psych 20100) and methodological issues (Psych 20200) in psychology (Taught Winter and Spring Quarters). Students may opt to take Stat 22000 or a more advanced statistic course instead of Psych 20100.

These courses should be taken as early as possible in their studies.

II. Breadth requirement

Students are required to take 4 of the following 5 courses. Each of these courses will be offered every year.

  1. Biological Psychology (Psych 20300)
  2. Cognitive Psychology (Psych 20400)
  3. Developmental Psychology (Psych 20500)
  4. Social Psychology (Psych 20600)
  5. Sensation and Perception (Psych 20700)

III. Psychology Electives

  1. At least six additional courses (for a major total of twelve), are to be chosen from among the courses offered by the Department of Psychology.

a. Only one undergraduate research course can count towards the twelve courses required of a psychology major (Psych 29200, 29700, and 29900).

b. In addition to the six electives students pursuing Honors in Psychology must also take the Honors Seminar (Psych 29800), which will be offered during the Winter Quarter.

c. When choosing elective courses, students should be aware that many require prerequisites. These prerequisites and course descriptions can be found in the Courses of Study and Programs.

IV. Research Requirements

  1. Research experience will be obtained by taking the Methodology course ( Psych 20200). We encourage students to gain additional experience by working on a research project under the guidance of a faculty member.
  2. A maximum of 1 research course can count toward the 12 courses required of a psychology major. ( Psych 29200, 29700, and 29900). The research course can be taken P/F but all other courses must be taken for a letter grade.

V. General Education Requirement

  1. Majors are required to take two quarters of calculus as part of the college general education requirements.
