Earl Franklin Scholars Research Prize - Summer 2008

This research award will provide $4,000 to support a third year student majoring in Psychology, to carry out psychological research during the summer before the fourth year. The award will provide living expenses so that the student can carry out research in anticipation of continuing this research as a senior thesis project in the fourth year.

Eligible students (Psychology majors in their third year) can apply by submitting a brief (5 pages) research proposal that explains the background for the research project, the specific aims of the research project, the proposed methods that will be used, and the significance and implications of the research. Supporting materials to accompany the proposal should include a brief (1 page) personal statement of research career goals and interests that would be pursued in graduate school and how the applicant’s course work has served in preparation of these goals. This statement should include a description of any relevant research experience. Selection of the Earl Franklin Scholar will be based on: (1) an evaluation of the research proposal, (2) the personal statement, (3) overall grades, and (4) grades in courses in Psychology. The deadline for submission of applications has not yet been set but will be sometime in March of 2008.

Deadlines for Students Graduating with Honors in Spring 2008 quarter:

Students who plan to receive a degree with Special Honors in Psychology at the Spring 2008 convocation MUST register their intentions with the Department of Psychology Student Affairs Administrator Marjorie Wash in Beecher 109 as soon as possible.  If you have any questions, please contact her at 702-8861 or email marj@uchicago.edu.  You are also encouraged to discuss this option with Anne Henly.

  1. May 7, 2008.  Students submits complete drafts of the honors paper to the honors paper advisor.
  2. May 19, 2008. Deadline for approvals from student's advisor and from the second reader of honors paper to be received by Psychology Department.  The student's advisor and the second reader should each email his or her approval to: Marjorie Wash at marj@uchicago.edu

A research requirement is required of all Psychology majors

The following are courses with a research component being offered in Spring 2008 that will satisfy the Psychology major research component requirement.

Psyc 24000/31200 Systems Neuroscience (J. Ramirez, C. Ragdale)
Psyc 26200 Research Seminar in Behavioral Endocrinology (M. McClintock)
Psyc 28700/38700 Social Cognition Research Seminar (N. Epley)

Other courses may satisfy this requirement.  If you completed an intensive laboratory project as a part of a course in psychology at the University of Chicago, you may petition the Curriculum Committee, describing in detail what the project entailed.  The committee will consult with the instructor and decide whether the course fulfills the requirement.  Psychology core courses (20300, 20400, 20500, 20600, 20700) and the methods course (20200) do not fulfill this requirement.
The lab requirement can also be met in two other ways:
  1. completing an honors thesis.
  2. taking an independent study research course with a faculty member in the Psychology Department.
