Ethan Jee-Yoon Kozlowski

Hailing from Virginia Beach, VA, Ethan Jee-Yoon Kozlowski, has embraced the unique academic and social environment that MACSS and the University of Chicago offers. Drawn to the program for its interdisciplinary approach to social scientific problems, he appreciates how MACSS seamlessly integrates computational methods with social theory. “Learning and then applying new and bleeding-edge techniques to understand social issues is a huge draw for me,” he explains.

In his first year, Ethan was impressed by the dedication of the instructional professors, who he found incredibly passionate about their research and committed to teaching. “They often go above and beyond to accommodate and learn from us,” he shares. He also notes that his fellow students are dedicated to learning in a collaborative and constructive manner. “There is a sense of pursuing knowledge for the sake of knowledge that I haven’t seen elsewhere,” he explains.

However, adjusting to the fast-paced quarter system has posed challenges, especially in managing workloads and deadlines. “Finding all the time I need to complete what I need to do is difficult,” he admits, noting that the condensed nature of the program can be overwhelming. Yet, these hurdles have ultimately led to significant personal growth and learning, particularly in terms of time management and prioritization.

Outside the classroom, living in Chicago has been a highlight of his experience, with Hyde Park offering a vibrant small-town feel while being just a short train ride from the bustling downtown. Ethan revels in the city’s lively culture, filled with opportunities for fun and bonding with fellow students. “I love Chicago; there are always plenty of events,” he says. “I would love to stay here long-term.” When he graduates, Ethan aspires to work in a governmental statistical agency or a data-driven non-profit, and he is sure that his time in MACSS will prepare him for many exciting career opportunities in the future.
