Student Grants and Fellowships

CMES students have the opportunity to access a variety of grants and fellowships through the Center and the University of Chicago. As a Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship-granting institution, CMES enables its students to gain firsthand expertise on the Middle East and its languages. Since 2010, 193 of our students have earned FLAS Fellowships, 38 have received Fulbright IIE and Fulbright-Hays Awards, and 8 have earned Boren Fellowships, enabling them to pursue intensive study of critical languages and gan regional expertise abroad in the Middle East and/or at the University of Chicago.

Fulbright

A variety of Fulbright programs support students at all levels of undergraduate and graduate education. Students apply through UChicagoGRAD.

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships

The Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (also known as FLAS or Title VI) is an award for students concentrating in modern foreign language and international or area studies. CMES administers awards for Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Turkish.  Students apply through UChicagoGRAD.

Center of Arabic Study Abroad (CASA)

CASA provides intensive, advanced training in Arabic.  Students apply through a competitive selection process.  Applicans should contact CMES to arrange proctoring of the CASA selection exam.

American Research Institute in Turkey (ARIT) Summer Language Fellowships

The American Research Institute in Turkey will offers summer fellowship to advanced students in Turkish language. Fellows study at Bogaziçi University in Istanbul.  CMES will proctor the selection exam for applicants.

American Institute of Yemeni Studies (AIYS) US Scholars Fellowship

The American Institute for Yemeni Studies (AIYS) holds an annual fellowship competition supporting research on Yemen and Yemeni Studies for U.S. citizens funded by grants from the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The U.S. Scholars Fellowship supports advanced research on Yemeni Studies for U.S. citizens to conduct research outside of the U.S. and Yemen.
